At Western Primary School, our vision for science is for the children to leave Year 6 and continue on into adulthood with the ability to question the world around them, observe the changes that happen over time and to not simply accept the world for how it is but make changes for the better.
Our ambition is to ensure that all children are given the opportunity to experience a rich, skills based and investigative science curriculum throughout the school from FS to Year 6 in order to ensure that the children will leave Year 6 as well informed young people who have a deep understanding of science and the practical skills to carry out fair tests. As leaders we ensure that all lessons allow for cross curricular connections wherever possible; linking closely with English and maths, as well as PE (during topics with a biological focus in particular), RE (allowing the children to have empathy for the living world around us), drama (acting out how particles behave in materials) and many more alongside.
Science across the school is cross curricular, with many topics having a science theme. Lessons link strongly with English and Maths as well as also connecting with other subjects such as PE. Science lessons are hands on and practical as we recognise that children best when they are fully immersed in their learning and directing their own investigations.
We have regular ‘Science Weeks’ where a pop up science club runs over a lunchtime, often linking with national science dates such as British Science Week in March.
